How to Play Movies From Usb on Ps4

What is PlayStation and What do I need to play video files?

The first word that pops everyone's head when someone says PlayStation 4, is "games". So, yes, it's a gaming platform, but it's also so much more.

To prove that, you should know that back at 2015, Sony released a new software called PlayStation 4 Media Playerwhich allows PS4 owners to not only play games, but also to watch video files / movies using the device. This capability practically turns the device to a very versatile media solution rather than just a gaming device.

Solution #1 for playing video files on PlayStation 4

The first option you have to watch the latest movies on PS4 from a USB stick, is to install PlayStation 4 Media Player.

Before doing that, here are some known issues you should be aware of:

  1. The software only supports USB sticks formatted as FAT32. When we tried to work with exFAT and NTFS, neither worked. This limitation also means that you're limited to up to 4GB per movie file, which is a limitation on the FAT32 file system.
  2. To make sure the software recognizes your movies, you should make sure the files are inside a directory (the name doesn't matter). If you just throw the movie files in the root directory of your USB drive, PS4 just won't recognize them. If you're trying to play audio files, the directory name should be called Music.
  3. The PS4 Media Player supports the following video formats: MKV, AVI, MP4, MPEG-2 TS, AVCHD (M2TS, MTS). If you're trying to play a movie with a different format, or if the player just doesn't allow you to play an allegedly supported file format, you should look into solution #2 below, because you're probably trying to play a movie with an unsupported video codec.

Assuming you checked all of the above limitations and you're ready to move forward, all you have to do is install the Playstation 4 Media Player from the apps store on your device, start the application and navigate to the video directory. The following screen shot may help:

Solution #2 for playing video files on PlayStation 4

You could run into several challenges when trying to play files on PlayStation 4: video or audio lag, dropped frames, missing audio, audio is not in sync, unsupported video format / codec errors and more. In order to overcome these obstacles, we recommend to first convert your video file to one of the supported standard formats (MP4 & MKV are the most recommended ones).

It can be done easily using VIP Video Converter:
